Why have they used the 604B horn? I thought the horn design for their 604-8H-III was supposed to be smoother and more extended?
I believe the general consensus is that while the UREI horn is superior to the 'eggcrate' multicell found on the 604c and later, the true multicell horn of the 604b is better
As for the older 2's - those weren't issued with that number by Altec, as far as I can see.
As for the III's - they are THE BEST 604 ever made: it's going to be pretty hard to beat the HF response, as they really DO play out to 20 kHz (the new horn is AMAZING!).
This is going to be one of GPA's "Classic Series" - Alnico V with a few twists, including the modern phase plug, as someone mentioned, and (perhaps) a different horn (it won't be the Mantaray or the new Radial). We're testing a version of it with the true multicellular horn used in the original 604 through the 604B to see how it performs. While nothing will outperform the new radial horn of the 604-8H-III, we have high hopes that the Carrington-designed multicellular horn will perform VERY nicely. Of course, with the white frame, Altec green magnet covers, the multicellular horn just "makes" the look.
More as soon as test are finished...
Hey Todd - care to chime in with the diffs you guys found?
Any more details on the Alnico 604 E 2s, prices, comparisons vith the GPA 604 8H II and III.

Has anyone tested the 604 E2s, and are they in production? I ask because I have 604-8Gs that I use daily and would like a second set of 604s so I can have the 8Gs remagnetized and possibly reconed. .. And have a reserve set of 604s for the future
Regards
Kjartan
